Sirenis Playa Turquesa - Playa Pesquero (All Inclusive)....
With five pools, six restaurants and six bars, the Sirenis Playa Turquesa has some impressive vital stats. You’ll find the pools at the heart of the hotel’s wraparound gardens. They look pretty dramatic, with waterfalls and fountains linking them up. As for the restaurants, there’s a main buffet place plus five á la cartes, including an Italian one serving up stone-baked pizza. If you’re after a taste of the ‘real’ Cuba, Guardalavaca is the one to beat. Granted, the name’s a bit of a mouthful, but the translation – ‘guard the cow’ – is a nod to the area’s rural past. Turn the clocks back 40-odd years, and the place was a sleepy farming hub. And although the luxury hotels that now line its coast are anything but rustic, the place never lost its go-slow vibe.
Take the beach scene, for example. All secluded coves and empty stretches, it’s about as far from the buzz of Havana as it gets. The main beach, Playa Guardalavaca, clocks up three kilometres of golden sand backed by clusters of palms. And the likes of Playa Esmeralda and Playa Pesquero are a similar story, with a large dose of snorkel-friendly waters thrown in.
Dotted along each strip of sand you’ll find hotels that go all-out to match the grandeur of their setting. We’re talking giant lagoon pools, evergreen gardens and interiors with ‘if you’ve got it, flaunt it’ appeal.
Last but not least, Guardalavaca has an ace in the pack – Holguin. The main city in the region is the place to get your fix of galleries, museums and restaurants. And the best bit? It’s only an hour’s drive away.
